Story : The only difference is the third dimension, which means this new release of The Lion King, hitting theatres for a two-week engagement starting Sept. 16, is either just a clever marketing ploy to crank out some extra cash at the box office for a studio with a reduced slate, or it’s an earnest salute to a new era of technology.

In truth, it feels like a little bit of both.

When it originally came out in 1994, The Lion King was the most technically advanced piece of traditional animation ever seen. The artists and technicians found a way to give the movie epic scale and depth, with a little help from the computers of the day, mostly through various focal planes.

They played with those planes: They faked the analog focus pull — where objects appear blurry or crisp, depending on the distance to the lens. They also used technology to track, pan and emulate all the tools of the live-action trade, only with pen and ink cells as the on-camera talent.

The marriage resulted in a modern movie masterpiece, so the idea of trotting out the same essential print, with a little technological tarting up, actually makes a lot of sense, because it not only introduces the film to a whole new generation of young people; it once again re-establishes The Lion King’s pride and domination of the animated jungle through technology.

Moreover, it shows us just how much animation has evolved in the interim. We do not see pen-and-ink animation anymore on the big screen. The very idea of drawing a line by hand, with an analog tool such as a pencil instead of a virtual instrument, is so outdated, it’s almost quaint.

One could easily get nostalgic about it all. We could whimper about the loss of the so-called human touch and the inimitable accessibility of a film with minute flaws and a hint of jiggle. These human imperfections are becoming harder to find in the digital era, where computers can auto-correct, but often, in all the wrong ways — and sometimes, even changing the entire meaning of the piece.

The Lion King is the last remnant of the era where mainstream animation truly reflected our human nature, and we didn’t expect perfection. Of course, that was also the point of the whole film, as a young lion cub is forced to accept his own imperfections and limitations.

Simba (Matthew Broderick) disobeyed his father, and, in doing so, placed his own life in danger. When his father sacrifices himself to save his son, Simba believes it’s all his fault and begins a period of self-exile from his pride.

It’s the stuff of classics, and every shred of this movie matches the intent and soulful message of personal growth and evolution, which is why it remains the emotional triumph it is.

The added dimension does not change the story. It does not flesh out any unexplored crevice of theme, which is why it all feels, in some ways, entirely gratuitous and just a tad exploitative. Then again, Shakespeare never loses his edge, and so this jungle take on Hamlet can handle all the bells and whistles and decorations the folks at Disney deem worthwhile. Certainly, the 3D effect — which is rather minimal in the end — doesn’t diminish either the technical or narrative achievement, and, in the end, that’s all that matters.
