Movie : The Debt

Release Date : August 31, 2011

Studio : Focus Features

Director : John Madden

Screenwriter : Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman, Peter Straughan

Starring : Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain, Jesper Christensen, Marton Csokas, Ciarán Hinds, Tom Wilkinson

Genre : Thriller

Official Website : SeeTheDebt.com

IMDB Rating : 6.8

Story : It takes a certain amount of – I can think of no better word than chutzpah – for an English production company and an American distributor to remake a celebrated Israeli film about the Holocaust. The original is from 2007. This one followed quickly after, and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival a year ago, before its release date was pushed into limbo by the sale of Miramax.

It’s a gripping (though fictional) tale of three Mossad agents on the trail of a Josef Mengele type in 1960s Berlin. We first meet them in 1997 when David (Ciarán Hinds) commits suicide for reasons only understood by fellow agents Rachel (Helen Mirren) and Stephen (Tom Wilkinson).

The action then reels back to 1966. A cunning plan will use a West Berlin train travelling through East German territory as cover for the three agents to get their Nazi prisoner over the wall and back to Israel for trial and (one presumes) a death sentence.

But first they have to catch him. Dieter Vogel, a.k.a. “the surgeon of Birkenau,” has rebranded himself as Doktor Bernhardt, an East German OB/GYN. Getting close to him requires a plausible patient, which is where Rachel comes in.

She’s forced to submit to intimate exams and gynecological chit-chat while confirming the identity of their quarry and preparing to pounce on him – which she eventually does at a grimly perfect moment.

Young Rachel is played by the chameleonic Jessica Chastain. She recently appeared as a bubbly Southern sexpot in The Help, and caught many a critic’s eye as a beatific Texas housewife in Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life.

She couldn’t be more different in this role as a newly minted Mossad operative. Not only does she portray a complex mix of forcefulness and femininity, but she alone among the three characters seems completely connected to her older self. Chastain says she studied Mirren’s early film roles to get a sense of how she moved and held herself back in the day. It’s paid off in spades.

The other two are played by New Zealander Marton Csokas (who looks more like a young Orson Welles than a young Ciarán Hinds) and Aussie action star Sam Worthington. When their abduction doesn’t quite go as planned, the three decide to hold Vogel in their leaky Berlin flat until a new plot can be hatched to smuggle him to the West.

At this point the film – directed by John Madden (Proof, Shakespeare in Love) – switches gears. The thriller moves from Cold War to psychological footing, as the young Israelis start to suffer from cabin fever and the unrelenting, goading taunts of their captive.

Making matters worse, Rachel discovers she’s pregnant – a fact known to their prisoner before either of her colleagues, one of whom is the father. This sets up a tense if ultimately undeveloped romantic triangle, the importance of which pales in comparison of the problem of what to do with the Nazi chained up in their living room.

The Debt hinges on a superb mid-plot twist when the loose end that is Vogel manages to work himself even looser. A necessary but necessarily slower denouement brings us back to the future, as Mirren searches for a way to deal with what happened in that cramped Berlin apartment 30 years earlier.

As to recycled story material, it’s neither the fastest nor the weirdest. Death at a Funeral had a similar three-year gap between English and American versions, both of which featured Peter Dinklage. And Yimou Zhang, whose House of Flying Daggers would seem to put him beyond the need for such tricks, made a copy of the Coen brothers’ Blood Simple called A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop. The Debt may owe a debt to The Debt, but it’s still a worthy investment.

The Debt opens wide Aug. 31.

Watch I Am Number Four Online Free With Streaming Quality

Movie : I Am Number Four

Release Date : February 18, 2011

Studio : DreamWorks Pictures

Director : D.J. Caruso

Screenwriter : Al Gough, Miles Millar, Marti Noxon

Starring : Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand, Callan McAuliffe

Genre : Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Suspense Thriller

Official Website : FindNumberFour.com

IMDB Rating : 6.1

Story : The story behind I Am Number Four is far more interesting than its actual storyline. It was the first property sold by Full Fathom Five, the “fiction factory” of disgraced A Million Little Pieces author James Frey; as chronicled in a scathing New York article, Frey offers young writers a few hundred dollars plus a profit share to ghost-write market-minded books he can shop around as multimedia properties. The film rights to I Am Number Four sold before the book did, and Frey has used that success to entice dozens more writers into his sweatshop.

In interviews, Frey has openly admitted his desire to create the next Harry Potter series by monkeying slightly with proven formulas; he also acknowledges adding distinctive weapons and jewelry into I Am Number Four entirely to produce marketable spin-off items. The film’s plot feels just as nakedly calculated for profit: It concerns an alien teenager (Alex Pettyfer) with developing superpowers, running from a race of alien warriors who want him dead for some cursorily explained he’s-a-Chosen-One reason. The important part is that he’s hunted, which gives him plenty of chances for flashy special-effects combat, teen angst over his life on the run, and pathos when he falls for an appropriately soulful Earth girl.

There are no vampires in I Am Number Four, but the emotional palette is ripped from Twilight (mope, yearn, glower), and the character dynamics from The Lost Boys: As the new kid in town, Pettyfer falls for Glee’s Dianna Agron; deals with her alpha-male ex and his coterie, who either want to embrace Pettyfer or beat him down; and gets some help from a cringing-but-knowledgeable little-brother figure. D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye) directs all this with a solid eye for thrilling battle scenes, but with little interest in escaping the cheesy overemotiveness of the script, written by Smallville co-creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, and frequent Joss Whedon collaborator Marti Noxon. If anything, Caruso embraces the eye-rolling excess, with characters walking away from explosions in slo-mo, and a pack of hissing, grinning baddies who seem to be channeling the Kurgan from Highlander. Really, everything in I Am Number Four is recognizable from many past films. Frey didn’t really need a ghostwriter for this story, he just needed an archivist with a Xerox machine and a mercenary streak.

Watch Thor Online Free With Streaming Quality

Movie : Thor

Release Date : May 6, 2011 (3D/2D and IMAX 3D theaters)

Studio : Paramount Pictures, Marvel Studios

Director : Kenneth Branagh

Screenwriter : Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz, Don Payne

Starring : Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Stellan Skarsgard, Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Josh Dallas, Tadanobu Asano, Idris Elba, Clark Gregg, Colm Feore, Samuel L. Jackson

Genre : Action, Adventure, Fantasy

Official Website : Thor.Marvel.com

IMDB Rating : 7.4

Story : I held out some hope for "Thor" because it was directed by Kenneth Branagh and costars Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman. It also kicks off a new franchise, and debut franchise flicks are usually a lot better than their sequels.

Not being an aficionado of the Marvel Comics hero Thor, not to mention Norse mythology, I approached this new lollapalooza with an open mind that was quickly addled by loads of back story and front story and an ear-splitting avalanche of special effects – in IMAX 3-D no less, just in case bodies and hammers hurtling straight at you in 2-D seems hopelessly passé.

"Thor" begins in the New Mexico desert – ground zero for all things extraterrestrially spooky. Astrophysicist Jane Foster (Portman), her mentor Dr. Erik Sevig (Stellan Skarsgård), and sidekick Darcy (Kat Dennings) are investigating an atmospheric disturbance when a big, bearded stranger – that would be Thor, played by hunky Australian soap star Chris Hemsworth – knocks into their RV.

Are you a Marvel Comic expert? Take the Thor movie quiz.

From here, the film, which was written by Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz, and Don Payne, flashes back and forth between Earth and the floating kingdom of Asgard, where Thor's white-bearded father, Odin (Hopkins), has had his hands full. In the run-up to Odin's coronation of Thor as his successor, the Frost Giants of Jotunheim, perpetual foes who seem to have cornered the market on pointy chins, crash the party. This sends Thor into a tantrum of retribution so unseemly that Odin ends up stripping him of his powers and banishing him to Earth, leaving his slit-eyed half-brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to ply his own hubris.

Branagh seems to have confused the sequences involving Odin and Thor with Shakespeare at his most doomy. In most other respects, this $150 million epic is monumentally cheesy. The special effects in the Asgard scenes are scaled big, and the Earth scenes, by deliberate contrast, are rather plain. As a result, I felt continually wrenched not only between two worlds but also between two very different kinds of headaches.

In a film like this, talented actors are often caught in a bind. Do I try to give a real performance – Hopkins's rather poignant solution here – or, à la Hemsworth and Portman, do I wink at the audience? I prefer the goofier approach, which is why, even though Hemsworth isn't going to be cast in "King Lear" anytime soon, he's the best thing about "Thor." He's absorbed the central lesson of his musclehead movie forebears: Beefcake is best when it's making fun of itself.

Watch Brighton Rock Online Free With Streaming Quality

Movie : Brighton Rock

Release Date : August 26, 2011 (NY, LA)

Studio : IFC Films

Director : Rowan Joffe

Screenwriter : Rowan Joffe

Starring : Sam Riley, Andrea Riseborough, Helen Mirren, Andy Serkis, John Hurt

Genre : Drama, Thriller

Official Website : IFCFilms.com

IMDB Rating : 5.7

Story : What does it take to commit murder?

In “Brighton Rock,” not much.

Rowan Joffe’s stylish gangster noir offers a pair of final deeds in its opening few minutes, the cruel consequences of which stop two lives — and forever change two more.

Mr. Joffe’s adaptation of Graham Greene’s 1938 novel is likely too obscure to change many viewers’ lives. But it’s moody, mysterious and marvelously menacing, despite somewhat muddled storytelling.

Like a fair bit that takes place in the film, the reasons behind the tandem killings that introduce the movie aren’t immediately obvious, and much of the first half of the film is devoted to sorting out why it all went down and what it might mean.

Yet the movie’s sumptuously shot gangland mayhem also serves as cover for a subtler question — not what it takes to kill, but why a driven, conscienceless killer might go out of his way to avoid taking a life that would be easy and convenient to simply snuff out.

That killer is Pinkie (Sam Riley), a sour young sociopath with an outsized craving for power and status in the realm of local criminal enterprise. Pinkie starts by taking charge of his local protection gang and quickly works his way up the ladder to Colleoni (Andy Serkis, once again displaying a delicate physicality), a suave local kingpin.

Greene’s novel gave Pinkie’s bloody ambition a coming-of-age jolt — he was just 17. At 30, Mr. Riley, in hair-slick DiCaprio mode, doesn’t quite pass for a kid. But he maintains a boyish edge charged by the sullen aimlessness of youth — here amplified by a decision to update the book’s setting to 1964, amid rioting between gangs of scooter-riding mods and leather-clad rockers. Pinkie’s unsure of his limits and himself, but greedy enough that he becomes frighteningly willing to test what those limits, if any, might be.

For the most part, Pinkie has no compunctions about violence, physical or psychological. But Rose (Andrea Riseborough) is another story. At first he seduces her to gain access to photographic evidence that could lead investigators to pin a murder on his gang. But even after acquiring the photo, he stays with her — and she with him.

That’s part of the mystery. He’s attractive, yes, and moneyed enough and well-dressed. But he doesn’t exactly treat her like a queen — quite the opposite. So why does she stay? Even Pinkie begins to wonder. “What do you get out of this?” he asks. Rose’s response? “A life.” But Mr. Joffe suggests that Pinkie’s decision to give Rose a life — in more ways than she ever expects — may ultimately amount to little more than taking it.

Writer-director Joffe is more successful at establishing a tone than guiding viewers through a narrative. His sense of mod-era menace is exquisite. But with too many characters to keep track of — Helen Mirren turns up as a cafe owner determined to out Pinkie’s homicidal ways, and John Hurt appears as another part of the local criminal firmament — Mr. Joffe’s narrative is muddled.

“Brighton Rock” may not explain all that is behind its murder and mayhem, but it makes sure it always looks good.

Watch Higher Ground Online Free With Streaming Quality

Movie : Higher Ground

Release Date : August 26, 2011 (NY, LA)

Studio : Sony Pictures Classics

Director : Vera Farmiga

Screenwriter : Carolyn S. Briggs, Tim Metcalfe

Starring : Vera Farmiga, Joshua Leonard, Bill Irwin, Donna Murphy, Norbert Leo Butz, John Hawkes, Dagamara Dominczyk, Ebon Moss-Bachrach

Genre : Drama

Official Website : SonyClassics.com/HigherGround

IMDB Rating : 3.8

Story : When Vera Farmiga's directorial debut, Higher Ground, screened at Sundance this year, I caught the first 90 minutes before having to run to another screening, and wrote this:

"In some ways, her film mirrors (Kevin Smith's) Red State, minus the horror-film overlay. Farmiga plays a woman who is a member of a small fundamentalist church, who begins to chafe at the restrictiveness of women's roles in that church. Interestingly, the serious part of the discussion was less interesting than the flashes of humor that Farmiga inserted; indeed, it might have been a more interesting film as a dramatic comedy. But that's based on seeing it in an incomplete way; I'll reserve final judgment until I see the whole film."

But when I caught the whole thing recently, I came away feeling like I'd seen a solid film by a self-assured director, one who didn't have an axe to grind dealing with a subject that could have been spun that way. Instead, Farmiga tells one woman's story, a search for faith in a setting that could easily be scolded or satirized.

Indeed, Higher Ground seems like a film of the moment, given the focus on faith placed by politicians who make a show of theirs. Written by Tim Metcalfe and Carolyn Briggs (based on Briggs' memoir), the film focuses on Corinne (Farmiga), who has devoted her life to faith without thinking too much about it. It's only when she starts to have questions that she gets in trouble.

We first see Corinne as a child, professing her faith to her pastor in Sunday Bible school. Still, as a teen, she's not much of a seeker. Instead, she's a would-be writer who attracts the attention of a classmate who is a star in a local rock band. The two pair off and, eventually, marry in a ceremony at which she is so pregnant that it comes seemingly moments before the birth of her first child.

Still, the rock'n'roll life is their path - until an accident with the band bus nearly kills them and their baby. Awed at the miracle of their own survival, they plunge into a fundamentalist church that apparently has its own community in the Catskills.

The adult Corinne wants to know God and have profound interactions with Him. She's a little jealous of her best friend, Annika (Dagmara Dominczyk), who is able to speak in tongues when the spirit flows through her. But she also relishes the Bible study groups, where she can listen to their pastor (Norbert Leo Butz) analyze scripture in ways she finds meaningful.

When she starts doing it herself, however, she is admonished (by the pastor's wife) not to take on a role that is meant for men. It's as if a light-switch is thrown - and she begins to notice that, in fact, women are treated like children - or worse - by the men in their church.

Studio : Roadside Attractions

Director : Maryam Keshavarz

Screenwriter : Maryam Keshavarz

Starring : Nikohl Boosheri, Sarah Kazemy, Reza Sixo Safai, Soheil Parsa, Nasrin Pakkho, Sina Amedson, Keon Mohajeri

Genre : Drama

Official Website : TakePart.com/Circumstance

IMDB Rating : 6.3

Story : With "Circumstance," writer-director Maryam Keshavarz offers a taboo-busting snapshot of contemporary Tehran — a provocative psychodrama that's part Iranian "Girls Gone Wild," set just before the 2009 elections.

Shireen (Sarah Kazemy) and Atefeh (Nikohl Boosheri) are beautiful teenage schoolmates attracted to each other — and to a host of things considered subversive in their repressive, male-dominated homeland; at night, the young women boldly doff their head scarves, slip into revealing dresses and then party away in an underground dance club.

When Shireen and Atefeh help a gay director friend dub a print of Gus Van Sant's "Milk" into Persian, you can be sure their assistance won't go unnoticed — and not in a good way. Enter Atefeh's fresh-out-of-rehab brother, Mehran (Reza Sixo Safai), now an informer for the Morality Police, whose new religious fervor masks a pitch-dark soul.

Though there's a certain contrivance to Mehran's stealthy manipulations (how exactly did he install surveillance cameras in his unknowing parents' house?), his presence ratchets up the tension and leads to an unexpected series of third-act events.

Kazemy and Boosheri are excellent, and Soheil Parsa and Nasrin Pakkho are also fine as Atefeh's doting, liberal parents.

And if Keshavarz is less successful managing the film's sometimes choppy narrative, she is clearly willing to take risks on all fronts. More power to her.

Watch Colombiana Online Free With Streaming Quality

Movie : Colombiana

Release Date : August 26, 2011

Studio : TriStar Pictures (Sony)

Director : Olivier Megaton

Director : Olivier Megaton

Starring : Zoe Saldana, Jordi Molla, Lennie James, Michael Vartan, Cliff Curtis

Genre : Action

Official Website : Colombiana-movie.com

IMDB Rating : 5.6

Story : Writer-producer Luc Besson gives us a parody of his earliest hits “La Femme Nikita” and “The Professional” with “Colombiana,” a lady assassin star vehicle for “Avatar’s” blue angel, Zoe Saldana.

See Zoe kill. See Zoe strip. Many times. See Zoe shower — a PG-13 shower. See Zoe dance seductively all by herself. See Zoe slip into a cat suit to carry out a hit from inside a jailhouse. See Zoe go for a swim. With sharks. In a sexy swimsuit.

“Colombiana” is a laugh-out-loud exploitation film about a young girl who, with bravery and confidence and physical skills beyond her years escaped from the drug lords who killed her drug lord daddy in Bogota, only to travel to America where she grows up and becomes a “tag killer,” somebody who marks her victims with a Cataleya orchid, since Cataleya is her name.

Cliff Curtis (“Sunshine”) is the uncle who trains her and arranges her business affairs — her hits. And…well, nobody else in the cast makes the least impression — bland FBI agents, bland boyfriend who doesn’t know her real name, even Jordi Molla as Marco, the murderer she escaped from 15 years before.

It’s all Zoe’s show as the ballerina-thin bombshell takes care of business, one or twenty-one bad guys at a time

The Spanglish dialogue is limited to Monsieur Luc’s command of English language movie cliches — “Never forget where you came from!” “She is like mist, under the door, a mouse in the wall!”

Fear her! Fear La Colombiana!

The accents  are off, as Besson and his acolyte, the hilariously over-named director Olivier Megaton, cast generic French actors to play American cops, in some cases. There are anachronisms — digital camera cards years before they existed, the French chase sport of parkour decades before Besson’s own “District B-13″ brought it to the world.

All that said, as straight exploitation, it’s amusing, in fits and starts. It’s just that “Colombiana” lacks the kinetic energy of “The Transporter” and the pathos of “La Femme Nikita.” Saldana, doing a variation of her killer diller lady assassin of “The Losers,” doesn’t suggest much of an inner life for the character.

And the action beats — over the top chases and shootouts — don’t have the visceral editing required to make them pay off, and always fall short largely because of tepid sound effects. The guns sound like toys and a few of the voices sound over-dubbed.

Then again, perhaps “Colombiana” will play better in its original French.

Movie : Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

Release Date : August 26, 2011

Studio : FilmDistrict

Director : Troy Nixey

Screenwriter : Guillermo del Toro, Matthew Robbins

Starring : Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison, Jack Thompson

Genre : Horror

Official Website : DontBeAfraidoftheDark-movie.com

IMDB Rating : 7.3

Story : “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” the film’s title instructs viewers. It needn’t have bothered; there’s nothing to be scared of here — or much to be entertained by either.

“Dark” is a remake of an eponymous 1973 made-for-TV movie that producer and co-writer Guillermo del Toro has declared the scariest TV movie ever made, which is perhaps a low standard to begin with. A prologue that takes place in the 1800s sets the tone and reveals the basic elements: A stately Rhode Island mansion and a sinister force with a sibilant whisper and a taste for teeth. The house, intended to be menacing, has the flimsy look of an ancient theme-park ride. It’s silly, not scary, although a brief incident with a hammer might make your gums hurt.

The prologue at least manages to flirt with horror. By the time the movie flashes forward to the present, it appears to have transformed into a drippy after-school special about a dysfunctional family.

Alex (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend Kim (Katie Holmes) are in the midst of restoring the old mansion from the prologue to its former glory, when Sally (Bailee Madison), Alex’s daughter from a previous marriage, arrives to live with them.

From there, Alex and Kim spend a lot of time squabbling about the restoration work and various financial problems. Sally, a precocious but petulant youngster, doesn’t get along with Kim. The movie wastes precious minutes on these mundane conflicts, none of which turns out to matter a bit. Any terror here comes in the form of tedium.

The casting doesn’t help. Although Sally is Alex’s daughter, she looks far more like Kim. Mr. Pearce’s character shifts from trusting father to sullen jerk for no discernible reason. Miss Holmes makes a quick conversion that is equally unbelievable. This unhappy family may be unhappy in its own way, but that doesn’t make it any more interesting to watch. The only point these scenes seem to serve is to make the audience wish some harm on the cast of insipid half-wits.

It’s the one wish this movie manages to fulfill. Before long, Sally begins to hear the same seductive whisper that haunted the prologue. Despite plenty of worrying signals — including an old bowl of bloody teeth — she initially trusts the voice, going far out of her way to seek it out, eventually setting it free.

The “it,” however, is really a them — an army of hairy, hunchbacked vermin fairy folk. Given how unsympathetic the film’s humans are, it’s tempting to cheer for these bug-eyed, poorly animated monsters on their quest to put Alex, Kim and Sally out of their misery. However, the little monsters prove incompetent in their own right by wasting time on various inconsequential household attacks.

Not only does “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” give viewers nothing to fear, it offers no one to root for. It’s a shame they can’t all lose.

Watch Our Idiot Brother Online Free With Streaming Quality

Movie : Our Idiot Brother

Release Date : August 26, 2011

Studio : The Weinstein Company

Director : Jesse Peretz

Screenwriter : Evgenia Peretz, David Schisgall

Starring : Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Rashida Jones, Hugh Dancy, Kathryn Hahn, Shirley Knight, Janet Montgomery, Steve Coogan

Genre : Comedy

Official Website : OurIdiotBrother.com

IMDB Rating : 6.6

Story : Paul Rudd’s charm has seldom been taxed as relentlessly as in Our Idiot Brother, which might as well be called Paul Rudd Is Charming: The Movie. Despite a cast that includes Rashida Jones, Elizabeth Banks, T.J. Miller, Steve Coogan, Emily Mortimer, Adam Scott, and Zooey Deschanel, Our Idiot Brother is a one-man show that leans far too heavily on its lead’s charisma and likability. Rudd ably carries the film while retaining a light touch, though even with Rudd in the lead, it’s still a featherweight trifle, an afternoon nap of a feel-good comedy.

Rudd stars as a farmer leading a life of mellow contentment and good vibes until a uniformed cop baits him into selling weed and he ends up in prison. Exiled from his hippie paradise upon release, Rudd meanders back into the lives of his three sisters: desperate would-be comedian Zooey Deschanel, who tries to compensate for low self-esteem with promiscuity; depressed mom Emily Mortimer; and uptight striver Elizabeth Banks. Life lessons ensue.

Rudd plays the lead as a man so sweet and guileless that he’s incapable of the white lies, evasions, and compromises of adulthood. He’s a simple man of enormous moral and spiritual clarity who infects his hopelessly neurotic sisters with his laissez-faire attitude toward life. Rudd might just be cinema’s first Manic Pixie Dream Boy: the dynamic is the same—impish life-lover devoid of an inner life or personal needs shakes up the lives of the depressed and anxious—even if the gender dynamics are reversed. Our Idiot Brother still represents a male fantasy, only this time it’s an awesome dude shaking up lives and opening minds. It’s just too bad the filmmakers feel the need to surround Rudd with shrill, misanthropic caricatures so that his decency and lack of pretension stands out in even sharper relief. Our Idiot Brother is an affable enough time-waster custom-made for casual viewing on cable TV, but Rudd deserves better.

Story : "Amigo" wants to tell a compelling story of the Philippine-American War - a war, in our opinion, completely lost to the Filipino's mentality and probably more so the Americans. Just see how much Filipinos love anything American and you will know what we mean. The movie, we believe, not only tries to be a historical piece on the war but also wants to voice out a political statement. In the end though, even with the beautiful scenery or the meticulous detail John Sayles's presented in "Amigo", the film cannot hide the fact that the story is a bland one at best. Read on to see the full-written review of "Amigo".

Rafael Dacanay (Joel Torre) is the head of the town of San Isidro. His brother, Simon (Ronnie Lazaro), on the other hand heads the local rebels. The rebels has forced the surrender of the Spanish outpost and charged Rafael with imprisoning the Spanish friar, Padre Hidalgo (Yul Vazquez). But when the American troops arrive and take over the town, everyone imprisoned is freed and a garrison under the command of Lt. Compton (Garret Dillahunt) is left to protect the town from the rebels. As tensions grow between the rebels and the conquering Americans, Rafael is forced to deal with both groups equally for the safety of San Isidro and its inhabitants.

You will be left disappointed if you think "Amigo" is anything more than a period film. It won't be controversial nor would it show any taint on the Filipinos, the Spanish or the Americans. It's biggest fault is a story that left us wanting and wanting for more and by the end of the film, all we could say was "that was it, really?". Minus the faulty and generic story is a film bounded with minutia detail and great performances especially from the Filipino outfit (it does showcase veteran actors from Philippine cinema and television). A lot of effort was made to make this as accurate as possible and it greatly shows. From the local dialect being spoken to the Friar speaking in straight Spanish and the need for translators all the time, you know that John Sayles was probably obsessive-compulsive when making "Amigo" and no one's complaining - not us for sure. The best part for "Amigo" though is the penchant for symbolism. It adds depth and meaning to a forgettable plot and caps "Amigo" better than most of it.

Watch Griff the Invisible Online Free With Streaming Quality

Movie : Griff the Invisible

Release Date : August 19, 2011 (limited)

Studio : Indomina Releasing

Director : Leon Ford

Screenwriter : Leon Ford

Starring : Ryan Kwanten, Maeve Dermody

Genre : Comedy, Romance

Official Website : Indomina.com/Griff-the-Invisible

IMDB Rating : 6.3

Story : What if Clark Kent was not actually Superman but a highly delusional nut case who could never fly and struggled to lift a coffee table? What if the movies we saw him in, the comic books and TV shows, were simply visual representations of his delirium?

That isn’t precisely the premise of writer/director Leon Ford’s Australian superhero piss take Griff the Invisible, a quirky low-fi companion piece to the better, louder, more conventionally minded and equally post mod Kick Ass. But it’s one of a number of interesting ideas Ford ambitiously throws into a kooky genre experiment that almost – but not quite – works despite itself. The problem is partly momentum and tempo: if you’re shooting for an offbeat pace, which Ford certainly does, it stands to reason you may struggle with rhythm.

Griff (True Blood’s Ryan Kwanteen) is a complaisant schmuck by day, whittling away the hours in a crummy office job. By night he monitors the neighborhood with a panel of spy screens in his apartment, and when trouble’s a-brewin’ slips on his super suit and roughs up the baddies.

Griff’s only friend is his brother Tim (Patrick Brammall), who has a quiet new girlfriend, Melody (Maeve Dermody). Also a loner, Melody smells one of her own, switches brothers and awkwardly pursues a relationship with Griff. The story becomes predominantly about a romance between kindred souls whose main attraction is shared weirdness, a sort of intimate twin delusion.

The chemistry between Kwanteen and Dermody is soft, endearing and a little too effortless — almost romantic sleepwalking. The manner with which Leon Ford ties perceptions of reality and imagination together with bits and bobs of the superhero genre is interesting, but the film’s aloof and unpredictable narrative sells some of its best achievements short.

Movie : One Day

Release Date : August 19, 2011

Studio : Focus Features

Director : Lone Scherfig

Screenwriter : David Nicholls

Starring : Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Patricia Clarkson, Ken Stott, Romola Garai, Rafe Spall

Genre : Romance

Official Website : ExperienceOneDay.com

IMDB Rating : 5.5

Story : Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess portray a couple whose friendship and more is marked on screen by visiting with them during a single day -- July 15 -- over a 20-year period in One Day.

One Day is based on the book by David Nicholls, who in a rare move by Hollywood, was allowed to adapt his book for the screenplay. Emma (Hathaway) and Dexter (Sturgess) first meet on their college graduation night and spend their first day together on July 15, also known as St. Swithin's Day in the UK. And with that, Emma and Dexter begin their two decade long journey.

The action quickly moves from their university to the cityscape of London. Hathaway’s Emma yearns to be a writer while Sturgess’ Dexter… well, Dex isn’t sure what he wants to do. But, he comes from money and in many ways doesn’t have to worry about such things.

Sturgess astounds in his role. The actor, who shined in the Beatles-themed Across the Universe, brings his impressive talent to the forefront with the not-so-easy task of capturing a character over a long period of time. Dex goes from a “who cares about anything” lothario to all around good soul worthy of Emma’s friendship and perhaps even love.

Hathaway, as always, is brilliant in One Day. For any American thespian, capturing a British accent is a thankless task. With such an army of amazing British actresses out there, it is unavoidable that if the American’s performance misses the mark, the cry for “Why didn’t they use a Brit” will come from all corners of the kingdom. Her success in One Day is hardly a surprise for Hathaway fans as they know what an amazing job she did capturing one of the UK’s favorite daughters -- Jane Austen -- in 2007’s Becoming Jane. Also, her characterization in One Day requires less alteration over time as Emma is already a middle-aged soul when we first meet her on that fateful college graduation night.

One Day is a simple story, yet it feels like a sweeping romance.

This format of storytelling is nothing new to cinema. Yet, 1978’s Same Time Next Year did it with more power. Although Same Time Next Year and One Day focus on two incredibly different couples with the former showcasing an affair between two people that is shared outside of their normal lives, the latter is a 20-year expose of a friendship that blossoms into love.

One issue we have with One Day? A plot device used in a million romantic films that audiences can see from a million miles away. It is hinted at in the beginning of the film before it flashes back to Emma and Dex’s graduation night. When the film catches up to the big moment near the end, it may be easy to feel cheated. With that being said, as Nicholls' book contained the same plot point and it works on the page, it is hard to fault the film for its use of this age-old cinematic storyline.

The film is also slow to get going and even when it starts to get into the meat of the story, it at times feels flat. As is the case with most page to screen adaptations, the book fares better than the film -- yet One Day still channels the novel’s heart and soul.

It hits theaters tomorrow and it sets Colin Ferrell loose as Jerry (yes, Jerry), a vampire who causes nothing but problems for Anton Yelchin's Charley Brewster.

A retelling of a classic, the movie takes full advantage of its 3D status, according to our pals at Movie Fanatic, resulting in an intense pace and a sinister, enjoyable scariness that is missing from many vampire tales these days.

Watch Conan the Barbarian Online Free With Streaming Quality

Movie : Conan the Barbarian

Release Date : August 19, 2011 (3D/2D theaters)

Studio : Lionsgate

Director : Marcus Nispel

Screenwriter : Thomas Dean Donnelly, Joshua Oppenheimer, Sean Hood

Starring : Jason Momoa, Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Rose McGowan, Saïd Taghmaoui, Ron Perlman, Leo Howard, Steve O'Donnell, Raad Rawi Fassir, Nonso Anozie, Bob Sapp, Milton Welsh

Genre : Action, Adventure, Fantasy

Official Website : ConantheBarbarianin3D.com

IMDB Rating : 5.7

Story :  Marcus Nispel’s baby-oiled, blood-slick Conan the Barbarian remake kicks off with a whopper of an origin story: Conan’s father (Ron Perlman) uses a dirty dagger to perform an emergency battlefield Caesarian on his wife, yanking out a howling infant in the middle of the scrum. The mother, who doesn’t even flinch, says, “I name him Conan.” Then she dies. Unfortunately, nothing else in the film is as barbarically batshit as that. And when the word "barbarian" is in the title, somebody better make with the unapologetic violence.

After his birth, we get a glimpse of Teen Conan, who seems to have learned a lot from Dad: He bashes bad guys’ skulls against rocks until chunks of skull go flying — and the vicious action is suitably nasty. But when Conan grows into a skull-cracking adult, his brutish demeanor mellows, and he even flirts with respectability. He's played by the beefy Jason Momoa (the barbarian from Game of Thrones); he looks fearsome enough, but he speaks better English than Arnold Schwarzenegger did in 1982, which is problematic. Schwarzenegger came off as a convincing, guttural brute when he said his goal in life was to “crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.” When Momoa says, “I live. I love. I slay,” he delivers the line with a fluid command of the English language that seems altogether inappropriate and not at all monstrous.

The film follows Conan's quest to avenge his father and the destruction of his village, but despite all the limb-hacking, throat-slitting, and brain-matter-splattering, this barbarian is a peach. He may stuff a piece of cloth in a woman’s mouth and call her his “property,” but, for the most part, he seems to be an almost absurdly well-behaved Robin Hood, freeing slaves, charming the ladies, and back-slapping fellow psychopaths. When he winks at a hot slave girl (Victoria’s Secret model and former Brett Ratner girlfriend Alina Puscau), she bounds willingly into his arms (apparently, all that time spent as a caged-up sex slave left her horny). His awkward romance with a “pureblood” nun is the stuff of an opposites-attract rom-com. The adaptation's blend of disgusting violence and principled behavior hews too closely to Robert E. Howard’s absurd pulp originals, in which this uneducated, bloodthirsty barbarian came to stand for some knightly code of conduct — less a wild man than a prince in exile.

Conan’s cuddly nobility and battlefield barbarity just don’t jibe, and the remake might have been better served had the film ditched the half-assed political correctness and gone full-on barbarian. In the film's credits, the character list has seven Topless Wenches and eight Nuns. If you’re going to make a nasty action flick about a retrograde warrior, you need to push that ratio more aggressively toward Topless Wench. Horror-porn films and art-house rampages like Nicolas Winding Refn’s Valhalla Rising have ratcheted up our tolerance for gore to such a level that Conan’s megaplex-ready violence seems too safe and controlled. It needs more disgusting killings: spilled intestines, a few more severed appendages, perhaps a castration or two. Unfortunately, like so many action flicks, the new Conan hovers in that uncanny valley between camp and horror: wild enough to titillate for a few fun fight sequences, too safe to leave much of an impression.
