Story : The Furious Five are back. The kung-fu dream team of Po the Panda, the tigress, the monkey, the crane, the mantis and the viper return in Kung Fu Panda 2 and this time, they are facing a much-deadlier enemy.
The wily, wicked, somewhat unhinged peacock Shen, voiced by Gary Oldman, who develops the canon, a weapon so powerful and destructive that it threatens to render Kung Fu extinct.
So, the five led by Po must defeat Shen and reaffirm Kung Fu’s place in the world, even as Po struggles with some inner demons – like finding out exactly who his parents are. Obviously, the harried, noodle-making goose isn’t his real father.
Directed by debutant Jennifer Yuh Nelson, this sequel is visually sumptuous, surprisingly emotional and sweetly funny.
Po, voiced by Jack Black, is a superhero but he’s also unapologetically geeky, incredibly clumsy and still, a bit of a glutton. There is a real ache and poignancy in his search for his back-story.
Tigress, voiced by Angelina Jolie, is also more etched out in this film. But a superhero story is only as good as its villain and Shen, with his flaming red eyes and piercing fantail is nicely nasty. Who ever thought that a peacock could be evil?
Of course the 3D requires many set-piece action sequences and the other characters hardly get any attention. But Kung Fu Panda 2 is exactly what a family needs on a hot summer day.
