So, what is the go with Breaking Dawn Part 1?

Well, like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the Twilight producers have carved the franchise finale in two.

Mainly so they can double-dip into the purses of Twilight’s massive, predominantly tween-age fanbase.

No real crime in that.

The reel crime is how little is allowed happen in such a long running time.

Proceedings get off to a promising, almost deceptively pacy start.

(Girls, don’t show up late. Taylor Lautner’s hunky werewolf Jacob is only seriously taking his shirt off just the once. This momentous event occurs inside the first minute. You have been warned.)

The opening act is quite rightly given over to the wedding everyone who ever bought a book by Stephenie Meyer has been waiting for.

The mortally foxy Bella (Kristin Stewart) and the immortally vampiric pin-up Edward (Robert Pattinson finally tie the knot. Which means, umm, they’re finally free to kiss (and stuff) all they want. We used to have to wait an entire movie for that.

Then comes a short honeymoon in Brazil during which Bella falls pregnant, like, immediately. Then Edward, worried that breeding a bloodsucker may be too much for his human bride, quickly hauls her back to the House of Cullen in the woods.

And then, nothing.

Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 locks into a miserable storytelling loop for well over an hour. While Bella wastes away to a near-death state awaiting the birth, Edward and Jacob bicker, buddy-up and bicker some more.

The cliffhanger ending, when it finally does lumber into view, is fairly out-there material by Twilight standards.

Rabid readers of the Twilight books already know all about Bella’s unusually problematic delivery of her first-born.

Let me assure any newbie Twi-hards out there, such a sight is not for the faint-hearted.

The series-closing Part 2 will be here this time next year. Only 364 sleeps to go, then.

Story: Italian filmmaker Gianni Di Gregorio is a little like his compatriot Nanni Moretti – he writes, directs and stars in his own idiosyncratic movies. There is a semi-autobiographical feel to Di Gregorio’s films as they deal with the regrets, longings, frustrations and mid-life crises of a man approaching old age. After a lifetime of acting in the theatre, working as an assistant director and screenwriter (the blistering crime drama Gomorrah, etc), Di Gregorio came to film directing late, making his debut at the age of 60 with Mid-August Lunch. His sophomore film, co-written with Valerio Attanasio, is a sharply written, poignant, melancholic and bittersweet comedy, which explores a number of similar themes.

In The Salt Of Life, the director himself tackles the role of Gianni, his cinematic alter ego, a retired 60-year-old who sees himself as still leading an active life. Not for him is the habit of sitting around outside the corner store talking about sports and other trivial matters with a number of other sad and miserable senior citizens.

Although he is surrounded by family – his wife (Elisabetta Piccolomini), from whom he is separated, his daughter (played by his real life daughter Teresa) and her slacker pot-smoking hippy boyfriend Michelangelo – he still feels lonely and unfulfilled. He runs various errands for his neighbours, and constantly worries about his elderly mother (feisty 96-year-old Valeria De Franciscis, reprising her role from the first film) who lives in an aged care facility.

Then his macho lawyer friend Alfonso (Alfonso Santagata) suggests casually that he should find himself a young mistress, “like every other senior Italian male.” Amongst those he has romantic notions for are his mother’s pretty young carer (Kristina Cepraga), the ditzy girl who lives on the floor below (Aylin Prandi), the recently divorced daughter of one of his mother’s friends, and a former friend from his schooldays. There is also an expensive and embarrassing double date with Alfonso and two pretty blond twins (Laura and Silvia Squizzato).

Despite his best efforts, Gianni just doesn’t have any success, and his attempts to find love end in disaster. Gianni completely misreads the situations and their attitude towards him.

Like his first film, The Salt Of Life is filmed in the working-class district of Trastevere, where di Gregorio was born and raised, and these locations add authenticity to the material. The jaunty soundtrack from Ratchev and Carratello adds to the upbeat atmosphere. There is a genuine sense of affection for many of the characters here. Most of the characters share their first name with that of the actors playing them, which further adds to the heightened reality of the film. The dialogue has a natural feel and rhythm that suggests much of it was improvised.

In particular, De Franciscis is a stand out, and she has a wonderful scene stealing presence as Gianni’s poker playing mother. With his hang dog expression, world weary attitude, air of decency, cynical observations, and a hint of vulnerability, Di Gregorio seems like an Italian cross between Robert Mitchum and Law & Order’s Jerry Orbach. But his self-effacing style is also reminiscent of Woody Allen.

This slight, gentle comedy lacks any big laughs, and some in the audience may find the film occasionally dull and laboured. However, with a relatively short running time of 90 minutes it never quite outstays its welcome.

Story: Taika Waititi's second feature film (after Eagle vs. Shark and episodes of TV's Flight of the Conchords), is a coming-of-age comedy/ drama set in the '80s, East Coast, New Zealand.

Boy (James Rolleston) is obsessed with Michael Jackson - in particular, his dance moves - and his little brother Rocky (Te Aho Eketone-Whitu) possibly possesses 'powers'. The pair are trying to find their potential (and the meaning of the word "potential") while living in the shadow of their larger-than-life dad, Alamein (Waititi).

In Boy's eyes, his dad is a hero: a deep-sea diver, war veteran, rugby captain, world record holder for beating up the most amount of people with one hand and close relation of Michael Jackson. But in reality Alamein is doing seven years in jail and is a member of the three-man Crazy Horses gang. Now out of the can, Dad returns home and Boy is confronted with the man he thought he remembered.

This is a beautiful looking rural family tale with superb acting but overall it falls a bit short of the mark or the brilliance of Whale Rider, which I have already heard it compared to. It has won the "Best Feature Film award at the Berlin International Film Festival and nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.

It is being marketed as a comedy but in reality this is a fairly deep emotional drama about child abandonment and bad parenting. The first words out of my mouth after the screening were "it's very quaint". This isn't really the marketing tagline you want for a film. I was expecting more. I found most of the comedy was seen in the trailer and the rest of it is good drama.

Waititi's direction is great and reflects the rural life and hard times that must be faced by a lot of young teenagers in these remote areas who are just discovering there is a much larger world out there. And deep down he really captures the realisation of discovering your parental figure is not the epitomy of cool you have dreamed they would be. He delivers a heartfelt film that begins as a comedy but gradually pulls back curtains and shows you a very sad tale of parental neglect and highlights that a lot of men should really wear condoms and should never become parents.

What makes this film is the casting and acting. James Rolleston is just superb as BOY - for someone who has never acted before and was cast three days before shooting he really makes this film. Listening to a radio interview with Rolleston and Waititi this week he says he just "wanted to try something different" and that he was told what to do and placed in front of the camera where he "just did it". Now that is acting for you - way to go James!!! Te Aho Eketone-Whitu (try saying that a few times) as Rocky is just as good, he carries a deep hurt that he killed his mother during child birth and you can see every emotion through his eyes, it is great to watch him onscreen. Without a care in the world or even realising it these two boys deliver a very powerful performance that is very sad and told through a cloud of humour. And, of course, Waititi plays the asshole father perfectly. I believe I told my viewing partner, Glen, during the film that he deserved to have his head kicked in - so I believe this means he did his job well.

Another thing this film achieved was making me fall in love with NZ all over again - god I love that place, it is so beautiful. BOY is out now on a limited release and it is a pretty decent family film to watch.

Story: Cult weirdoes Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim define their small-screen oeuvre with delirious excess and unrepentant weirdness, but their cult television shows look positively austere compared to their cinematic directorial and starring debut, Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie. The film’s ramshackle plot finds a slicked-up Tim & Eric spending $1 billion on a “film” that doesn’t stand a chance of recouping its budget, especially given its three-minute run time. This naturally enrages the heads of a sinister multinational corporation run by a perpetually apoplectic Robert Loggia.

Tim & Eric desperately need to pay back their billion-dollar debt to Loggia. Thankfully, an opportunity to make exactly that much arrives when eccentric, Top Gun-loving businessman Will Ferrell (who also produced, along with Adam McKay and Chris Henchy) offers anyone an opportunity to make a billion dollars by running a mall so rundown and hellish, it looks like the last commercial enterprise of a post-apocalyptic future. (Or something found in one of Detroit’s nicer neighborhoods.)

The mall’s inhabitants include sickly, semi-feral John C. Reilly, an angry sword-shop proprietor (Will Forte), an incongruously dignified man who runs a used-toilet-paper outlet, and a somewhat-attractive middle-aged woman who inspires intense sexual competition between Tim & Eric. Billion Dollar Movie features one of the most graphic, viscerally unnerving sex scenes in recent memory; it’s a testament to the film’s chutzpah and eagerness to push boundaries that something infinitely more disgusting (involving children, no less) is happening at the same time. Freed from the restrictions of cable television, Tim & Eric are able to let their warped imaginations run wild, and they’ve never been the type to rein themselves in.

Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie boasts the courage of its lunatic convictions. Rather than attempting to broaden the duo’s fan base, it seems gleefully intent on scaring away mainstream audiences. In a timid comic world, Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie feels genuinely dangerous and transgressive: it makes a virtue of going way too far because other comedies don’t go far enough.

Director Paul Weitz’s official first trailer for Being Flynn has hit the web. The movie is an adaption from Nick Flynn’s memoir, published in 2004, that was titled Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. The big screen feature includes well known actors Robert De Niro, Julianne Moore, Paul Dano and Olivia Thirlby.

Set to open in the spring of 2012, Being Flynn chronicles one writer’s discovery of his absentee father, who he encounters years later, homeless and living in a shelter. According to the cast line-up Paul Dano will play the central character with Robert De Niro on board as the homeless father. Julianne Moore will play Dano’s mother, and Thirlby will take on the role of a shelter worker.

Story: Directed by newcomer Nima Nourizadeh and co-scripted by Scott Pilgrim/21 Jump Street writer Michael Bacall and relative unknown Matt Drake, Project X is bringing some fresh creative talent behind the camera to match its cast of fresh faces. The story (as it is) revolves around high school senior Thomas (Thomas Mann) and his two friends J.B. (Jonathan Daniel Brown) and Costa (Oliver Cooper), as they exploit Thomas’ parent-free home in Pasadena to throw the mother of all birthday parties that will hopefully result in their names being scribed in the hallowed pages of high school legend. But as with any rolling snow ball, the boys’ party gets too big, and starts speeding downhill too fast for them control.

Sporting taglines like “Best Part Movie Ever!” or “Parents’ Worst Nightmare” or the PR-approved slogan “The Event That Will Turn Losers Into Legends,” Project X is positioning itself to become THE party movie of a new generation. I’m loath to admit it, but in my high school years the big party movie was Can’t Hardly Wait; it seems (upon initial glance) that this generation is getting the better end of the deal.

As far as Project X‘s qualifications as a good movie? Well, the premise is pretty basic, there isn’t going to be a whole lot of acting talent to speak of, and the story is one we’ve seen over and over agin on film. It pretty much boils down to whether or not the screenwriters and director have concocted a series of entertaining situations like those we saw in the trailer (roof jumps, flamethrowers, taser-based confrontations with neighbors). So far, it looks as though they have – and the R-Rating promises that there is more bad behavior yet to be seen.

Project X will be in theaters on March 2, 2012.
